Desire to serve others honors a father’s legacy

Our local communities are full of dedicated nonprofits with inspiring missions. TS Bank wants to celebrate some of these nonprofits by featuring them in our Investing for Good blog series. Read our interview with Sally Myers, TS Bank employee, as well as new board member of the Iowa School for the Deaf Foundation and her special connection to this organization. Stay tuned for additional inspiration from nonprofits serving our community.

Could you tell us more about this organization and its mission?

The Iowa School for the Deaf Foundation’s mission and vision is to enhance opportunities for student success through education, engagement and philanthropy of our communities. They envision a community where all students who are deaf or hearing impaired can be successful and independent.

How did you get involved with the Iowa School for the Deaf Foundation?

The opportunity of a board opening was brought to my attention through volunteer opportunities with my employer, TS Banking Group.

What caused you to join and be part of the organization?

My dad, Eugene Stewart, worked for Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) for 26 years, retiring in 1988. He spent a majority of those years as athletic director. I have many fond memories of being on campus and in the gymnasium with him. He valued his time at ISD and made an impact during his time there. He started a girls’ volleyball program, brought back girls’ basketball and the Midwest Deaf Relays for the track program. In 1989, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Director’s Association Hall of Fame.

What have been some projects or overall impact from this organization?

The foundation helps provide experiences and equipment for students that cannot be obtained through state appropriations. The foundation has been able to build the Lied Multipurpose Complex, greenhouse, has created the Long Hall Science Center and purchased two playgrounds all through private donations and funding. It also administers scholarships for students seeking post-secondary education and appropriates mini grants for ISD staff to fund student-centered projects.

How can others help or learn more?

Community members can visit www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.org for more information and view virtual campus tours of the preschool, elementary, middle school and high school, as well as the 4Plus transition program. Plus, see more activities and updates on their Facebook page here.

Favorite story or memory with the organization thus far?

Being a new board member, I have only attended one virtual board meeting so far, however, there are some long-time employees on the board that knew my dad. It has been so nice to hear their kind words in memory of his time there.
