Frequently Asked Personal Tax Questions

Here are the most common questions our clients ask about their personal tax returns.

When are personal taxes due?

On a normal year, individual tax returns are due on April 18th. However, you may file for an extension if needed. Filing an extension gives you six months to file the tax return, due October 16th.

Estimated payment due dates (on a normal year) are:

  • Q1: April 15th
  • Q2: June 18th
  • Q3: September 16th
  • Q4: January 15th

Who needs to file an individual tax return?

You are required to file a federal income tax return if your income is above a certain level, which varies depending on your filing status, age and the type of income you receive. However, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers some people should file even if they aren't required to because they may get a refund if they had taxes withheld or they may qualify for refundable credits.1

What materials do I need to file my tax return?

It's important to provide identification documents like an un-expired photo ID such as a driver's license. You will also want to provide any tax and income documents you receive from your employer and others. All documents that have been provided to the Internal Revenue Service need to be forwarded to us to minimize any issues down the road. Additionally, make sure to provide any documents you might use for your deductions, such as receipts for college expenses, interest on your home mortgage, vehicle registration, donations, etc.

Completing your tax return

A Collins Consulting tax preparer will contact you via phone, email or Zoom (video conference) to review your return before its finalized. Once the return is finalized with you, we will send the documents via DocuSign for you to e-sign and return. Within these documents, there will also be a copy of your return. If you do not have access to a computer or prefer a paper copy of your return, you may request a paper copy for an additional fee and we can discuss your delivery choice at the time of your return review.

We are asking clients to drop off copies of documents and not the originals. This will allow us to work on your return digitally, via email through secure e-signatures.

Please complete the required digital tax prep questionnaire, before submitting your tax documents to us. As a reminder you can upload and attach documents to this questionnaire. If you choose another method to provide tax documents the questionnaire will still be required.

This will ensure our tax preparers have the most accurate information and will know what to discuss with you while reviewing your return. You may also request a personalized organizer by emailing customerservice@collinsconsultingservice.com.
