Over 100 books gifted to elementary students to celebrate 100 years

May 9, 2023

Council Bluffs, IA, May 9, 2023 - As part of TS Bank’s 100-year birthday celebration, over 100 (249 total) books were gifted to first grade students at Franklin Elementary, Rue Elementary, College View Elementary and Treynor Elementary during last month’s special book reading, blending the love of learning and saving.

Chartered in May of 1923, TS Bank has a mission to IGNITE PROSPERITY®, and is dedicated to changing lives and communities across the Midwest. Additionally, the bank is committed to teaching financial literacy, hosting educational events and partners with local nonprofit organizations.

This past April marked the 20th year of National Financial Literacy Month and the recent elementary book reading connected with students on wise ways they can save, spend and share their money. The month highlights the enduring importance of financial education and TS Bank is committed to the community by offering financial, economic and entrepreneurial education to local schools, non-profits and community organizations.

“Every savings journey has a unique beginning. We believe it is never too late to start taking control of your financial future,” said Traci Dresher, Financial Literacy Programs Manager. “The goal of the book read was to help empower students to think differently about their personal financial story. This was a great way to celebrate TS Bank’s 100 years in community banking and connect the behavior of saving with the love of learning.”

TS Bank employees read, “Rock, Brock and the Savings Shock,” by Sheila Bair about a tale of two brothers who have significant savings habits. Rock and Brock may be twins, but they are as different as two twins can be. One day, their grandpa offers them a plan—for ten straight weeks on Saturday he will give them each one dollar. But there is a catch!

Students of each elementary heard how Rock spends his money, while Brock saves his money and how their lives change when they work together to plan for their financial future. After the book reading, every first-grade student at each school received their very own book to read and take home.
