We sat down with Austin to ask about his role, experiences and interests, and here’s what he had to say! Read the full Q&A here.

Personal & Professional Background

What inspired you to pursue a career in banking?

Like many career bankers, I originally had dreams and aspirations outside the industry. However, I was drawn in after taking an entry-level job in banking as a college student. I quickly recognized two things: the lack of financial education among those around me and the significant impact I could make by sharing financial knowledge and expertise. That realization sparked my passion for helping people achieve financial confidence and success.

What’s the most memorable client interaction you’ve ever had?

I’ve had many meaningful interactions, whether helping someone secure a loan to start their first business or guiding someone through creating their first budget. But the most memorable was a time I had to share honest feedback that was difficult for the client to hear. It ultimately helped them make better financial decisions. Years later, they came back to thank me, and that moment really stuck with me.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone applying for a loan, what would it be?

Always take an honest look at the cost versus the return on the investment or purchase before moving forward. Especially in small business, a little planning upfront can make all the difference and remove any emotionally based decisions.

What’s a common myth about banking or lending that you’d like to debunk?

Popular culture often depicts bankers in a negative light, but the reality is quite the opposite. Strong community banks play a vital role in the success of local economies and the people who live there. When banks thrive, communities thrive - and that’s something worth celebrating.

Beyond Banking

If you weren’t in banking, what would your dream job be?

I believe attitude and contentment go a long way in making any job feel like a dream job. But if I had to choose something completely different, I’d gravitate toward the golf industry, specifically golf resort management. I enjoy everything about it.

What is one thing you never leave the house without and why?

My laptop and a notepad with a pen. Technology is great, but nothing beats the simplicity of pen and paper for cementing ideas in your mind or the satisfaction of physically checking off a to-do list.

What does a typical Sunday afternoon look like for you?

Worshiping our great God and spending time with my family.

What’s one thing in your office that always sparks a conversation with clients or coworkers?

Either family pictures, or a good book that I am reading that I usually leave on the corner of my desk.

Personal Interests & Hobbies

Current boards or volunteering you do and why you choose to get involved with those organizations?

I’m involved with several organizations that align with my values and passions. Rotary, whose motto is “Service Above Self,” reflects both what it means to be a banker in the community and my personal commitment as a Christian. I currently serve as President of the Council Bluffs Noon Rotary.

I also serve on the Pottawattamie County Housing Trust Fund because safe, affordable housing is critical to a thriving community, and it’s one of the greatest challenges we face locally. The MICAH House is another organization close to my heart because of the dignity and respect they provide to those experiencing homelessness.

Additionally, I support the Historic General Dodge House because preserving our history is essential. I believe it’s difficult to move forward successfully if we don’t understand the people, events, and stories that shaped our past. And finally, I serve at my church, which is of utmost importance to me as a follower of Jesus.

Do you have a hobby or skill that others don’t know about?

I think most people know that I love to golf, as well as enjoy biking, hiking, and almost anything outdoors.

What’s a dream destination you’d love to travel to?

Israel would be at the top of my list. Beyond that, I’d love to visit all 50 states (I’m at 34 so far) and all seven continents (three down!). There’s so much variety right here in the U.S., and my wanderlust makes me want to experience it all.

If you could recommend one book or movie that influenced you, what would it be?

The Bible is, without question, the book that has most influenced me and continues to shape my life daily. Outside of that, while not profoundly influential, I think the original Lord of the Rings trilogy offers incredible life lessons if you pay attention.

What’s your favorite local small business to support and why?

I love great food, so I’d have to say all the local restaurants in Pottawattamie County and the surrounding areas. Supporting them not only means enjoying amazing meals but also helping sustain the vibrant local scene.
