Over 40 years of watermelon

Westfair 2019 is almost upon us.

The county fair for West Pottawattamie County will run from Wednesday, July 24, to Sunday, July 29, with 4-H livestock competitions and static displays, arena shows, the queen contest and more.

TS Bank is proud to sponsor the fair in multiple ways, including contributing $750 toward the pedal pull contest and $250 to the queen pageant – which includes $100 to the winner.

TS Bank has also implemented a matching program for donations by 4-H members. For every dollar 4-H youth donate to the livestock building fund, TS Bank matches it - this year up to $3,000. Since 2014, TS Bank has donated more than $11,000 to the program.

Including TS Bank's donation of up to $3,000 this year, the funds will reach a collective total of $14,000 ($28,000 including the 4-H participants contributions). Westfair has used this money to repair and renovate grandstands, pens along with other buildings.

In recent years 100 percent of 4-Hers have voluntarily participated.

The program is one way TS Bank hopes to inspire philanthropy through community reinvestment.

“We are overwhelmed by the participation each year!" said TS Banking Group Director of Community Reinvestment Kelsey Stupfell. "We're happy to help allow opportunities like this for our youth to voluntarily give back, creating even more community impact.  As a former 4-Her, connecting the hands, heart, hands and health mission within our community is always a win.”

Cutler O’Neil Meyer Woodring of Council Bluffs also participates in the program, with the funeral home matching funds donated by 4-H members.

Arena events at Westfair 2019 include the Lucas Oil Pulling League truck and tractor pull at 7 p.m. on July 25 and figure eight races at 7 p.m. on July 26. ATV and dirt bike races will be held at 7 p.m. on July 27. Motocross championship series races will be held at 10 a.m. on July 28, with the demolition derby at 7 p.m. that night.

Don’t forget to stop by the annual TS Bank watermelon feed, which will be held after the July 27 cattle show. Every year since 1978, the year the Guttau family purchased the bank, TS Bank has hosted the annual watermelon feed.

TS Banking Group Board Secretary Judy Guttau noted that these days the bank serves about 300 pounds of watermelon, down from the highwater mark of 1,200 pounds in the past.
