At CHI Health, our core purpose is to heal the body, mind and spirit. Our most important focus is to care for our patients and their families.

We are excited to announce that the CHI Health Foundation and TS Bank are partnering with Mercy’s Behavioral Health team to revitalize a therapy garden and green space for McDermott patients. The green space will include different environmental elements, such as a working garden, flowers, recreation area, and meditation space, to improve patients’ healing, recovery, and experience.

TS Bank, a strong supporter of the community and Mercy Hospital, has pledged $5,000 to this project.

“We are glad to partner with Mercy Hospital and how the behavioral garden will serve area patients in their personal healing and recovery process,” said Kelsey Stupfell, director of community reinvestment at TS Banking Group. "This is a great addition to our community’s overall healthcare experiences."

Mercy Hospital intends to incorporate the colors and sounds of nature into the revitalized green space. Our goals of this project are to:

  • Facilitate stress reduction which helps the body reach a calmer, more balanced state and enhances the immune system.
  • Facilitate pain reduction and reduction in use of narcotic pain medication.
  • Facilitate improved outcomes, and as a result, less readmissions.
  • Provide patients with the opportunity to relax and reflect and activate their own inner healing resources.
  • Provide patients with opportunities for physical movement and exercise in the fresh air.
  • Provide settings where patients can gather together and enjoy social support.

This project so clearly connects to our mission of healing each patient in mind, body and spirit and the project is part of the foundation upon which Mercy was built. In 1903, Mercy treated its first patient: a behavioral health patient, and 116 years later, we are still continuing the Sisters of Mercy’s mission.
