Understanding your role
Executor: Responsible for managing and distributing a deceased person’s assets according to their will, through the probate process.
Trustee: Manages assets held in a trust, following the instructions set out in the trust document, often outside of probate.
Five key steps for executors and trustees
- Gather important documents: You will need to obtain the will, trust documents, death certificate, financial statements, insurance policies and property deeds.
- Notify relevant parties: Next, inform beneficiaries, heirs and financial institution(s) and any creditors must also be notified, to ensure any debts are settled from the estate.
This step can sometimes bring heightened emotions or differing expectations to the surface, especially when family relationships are complex. Having thoughtful, neutral guidance can make a meaningful difference. TS Prosperity Group’s team is experienced in facilitating sensitive conversations, helping reduce friction and keep the process moving forward with alignment and care.
- Secure, value and distribute assets: It’s important to protect property and valuables as well as arrange for appraisals if needed. Follow the instructions in the will or trust and ensure all legal requirements are met before making distributions.
- Manage debts and expenses: This step can be one of the more tedious and sometimes sensitive tasks of being an executor or trustee. The need to pay any outstanding bills, taxes and funeral expenses makes collaboration with professionals, like tax advisors, attorneys, or financial planners a wise decision. This can ensure accuracy and protect everyone’s interests,

We bring clarity to probate and trust administration, guide you in communicating with beneficiaries (even in complex family situations), and support you in protecting and transferring assets efficiently.
