TS Bank mentors inspire learning beyond the classroom
July 6, 2026
When learning goes far beyond the classroom and comes to life, it creates moments that shape confidence and connection. Through mentorship and hands-on engagement, TS Bank employees, Traci Dresher and Stephanie Schuster helped students at College View Elementary turn their ideas into real-world impact.
During the International Baccalaureate (IB) Fifth Grade Exhibition, nearly 16 student-led group projects transformed curiosity into action on a variety of topics that carried a strong global connection.
Among those projects was a group focused on mental health - a topic that required both courage and compassion. With guidance from TS Bank employee mentors, these students explored what it means to care for themselves and support others, gaining insights that will stay with them far beyond elementary school.
Mentorship that makes a difference
TS Bank employees were proud to support students throughout the seven-week journey as mentors, offering encouragement, perspective, and real-world connection.
“Our fifth-grade team of students was deeply engaged in exploring the meaningful topic of mental health,” said Traci Dresher, TS Bank Programs Manager. “Through their research and discussions, they developed a stronger understanding of how challenges can impact not just an individual, but those around them as well.”
Along the way, students stretched themselves - building confidence as risk-takers, collaborators, and leaders. The result was more than a final presentation; it was a transformation in how they see the world and their place in it.
For mentor and TS Bank employee Stephanie Schuster, the experience was just as impactful.
“These fifth graders taught me that mental health isn’t something simply taught—it’s cultivated,” Schuster said. “It’s nurtured through trust, reflection, and the strength found in community.”
She added that one of the most powerful lessons was learning to step back and listen.
“Sometimes just being present and allowing them to navigate these conversations on their own terms made all the difference.”
On Exhibition Night, students proudly showcased their work, demonstrating skills like research, communication and critical thinking, while tackling real-world issues that matter to them.

The team of students were Sophie B., Alanna R., Savannah P. and Penelope B. and Traci Dresher and Stephanie Schuster strike a pose and then students listen in on interview with Jessica Streeter with Employee & Family Resources.
Pathways to learning
The 65 fifth-grade students were divided into 16 small, interest-based groups and, with mentor guidance, explored their topics from multiple perspectives. As part of the project, each group interviewed an expert. The mental health team, supported by TS Bank mentors, connected via Zoom with Jessica Streeter, LMSW, LISW, of Employee & Family Resources in Des Moines, who encouraged students to prioritize their well-being.
“Build consistent routines to support yourself so you can better support others,” said Streeter. “Normalize mental health like physical health - talk openly so others know they’re not alone. Big emotions are normal, and it’s okay to ask for help.”
Students also learned from retired school counselor Dr. Marti Drake, who addressed misconceptions about mental health.
“Each person’s lived experience shapes how they feel and respond,” said Drake. “Respect others’ privacy and approach them without judgment as they navigate challenges.”
Turning learning into action
Before presenting at Exhibition Night, the students were challenged to “take action," and they did just that.
The mental health team of four students, led by Dresher and Schuster, chose to share their learning with younger peers, reaching 75 fourth-grade students at College View Elementary. They led outdoor sessions demonstrating how physical activity, like yoga, can positively impact mental health - bringing their research to life in a way that was both engaging and practical.
They didn’t stop there.
With support from community partners, the students also assembled and distributed wellness-themed swag bags for each fourth grader - creating a tangible reminder of the importance of both physical and mental well-being.

The Fifth Grade IB Exhibition showcased the power of community, bringing together students, educators, mentors and local experts to turn learning into action. Through collaboration and real-world experiences, students strengthened connections and created a positive impact for others. Together, they demonstrated that when a community invests in its students, meaningful change can happen at any age.
Building financial confidence early
College View’s student leadership extends beyond the IB program. Earlier this year, TS Bank also wrapped up its work with the College View Little Lynx student branch, where students gained hands-on experience with financial concepts and decision-making.
This experience is part of a larger effort across southwest Iowa.
TS Bank supports four student-led banks at Rue, Franklin, College View and Treynor Elementary, programs designed to introduce students to financial concepts early and empower them to make sound money decisions.
As part of National Financial Literacy Month, TS Bank also invited parents to step into the experience offering opportunities to shadow student bankers and see firsthand how their children are learning through real-world application.

"What stood out to me most is how authentic it is for the students," said Beth Watkins, Franklin Elementary parent. "They aren't just practicing skills, they're applying them in a way that mirrors real life. I'm grateful both of my kids have had the opportunity to participate."

Investing in the future
At the heart of these efforts is TS Bank’s long-standing commitment to financial wellness and community investment.
Since 2009, TS Bank has partnered with schools to deliver financial education for students from kindergarten through high school as well as offering adult education programs. These initiatives are made possible through the bank’s mission to reinvest 10 percent of its pre-tax income back into the communities it serves.
At each school dedicated coordinators and community partners help bring these programs to life, creating environments where students can build practical life skills early.
Experiences like this go beyond managing money, it shapes confident thinkers and compassionate leaders. TS Bank employees and mentors were honored to play a role in their journey as they explored real-world topics and discovered the power of their own ideas, while building skills that will last far beyond fifth grade.
