Corning, IA – TS Bank supported the Southwest Valley Elementary after school programming Initiative with a $10,000 donation to kick off their fundraising drive.

The programming will strengthen the community by giving families resources they desperately need when their children are still in elementary.

Currently, Villisca Elementary has 47 students enrolled in an after-school program that is staffed by only one person, while no daily after school program exists in the Corning district. With the lack of programming currently available, many students in both Corning and Villisca spend after-school hours and summer days unattended.

“As a parent of two young children, I feel that an after school program would be a great asset to have in our community.” Said Kelly Herring, AVP of Consumer Credit.  “It will give our children an opportunity to continue learning outside of the classroom and it will also help parents who may need an option for their children while they are working. I am proud that TS Bank would help support the school and their efforts to develop this program.”

According to America after 3PM, Rural Communities, the average time rural children spend alone and unsupervised during the week is seven hours.

Corning Elementary school sent a survey to parents to inquire about the necessity of a Before and After School program along with a possible summer program, with the results showing the biggest need was for an after school program, and over 37 percent of the 244 students attending Corning Elementary Pk-5th grade parents responding with interest.

TS Bank’s donation will help to fill the need in the Corning area.

"Corning Elementary is incredibly grateful to TS Bank for their generous donation in support of beginning an after school program for the children in our community.” Said Linda Brecht-Kwirant, Corning Elementary Principal. “Without their initiating support, this effort may not have been made fruitful. The Elementary-aged students of Adams County will benefit greatly from this gift TS Bank has given our school."

Finding additional partners to bring a Before and After School Program and possibly a longer Summer Program would benefit parents, teachers, students and most importantly, the future of the Corning community.

"It is the goal of SWV to support our families and help the students of our communities be successful now and in the future.” Said Liz Timmerman, SWV K-12 At-Risk Coordinator.  “Offering an after school program is just one of those ways we can partner with other entities, such as the Kid Care Council, in order to bring such programs to our small, rural community. Thank you to TS Bank for reaching out and investing in the school."
